Maroulis, Elena, & Stieber lead USA at Golden Gran Prix

At the very tough Golden Gran Prix in Azerbaijan, Helen Maroulis & Elena Pirozhkova won gold while Logan Stieber & Alli Ragan won silver to lead the American performance.

Don't think the stiff competition was limited to the men's side of things. Maroulis was tested in a very tough bracket first by the breakout star from Vegas, 2015 bronze medalist Odunayo Adekuoroye (Nigeria). Maroulis was able to get a 6-6 criteria win. Then in the finals, Maroulis battled Mattson (Sweden), 2015 silver medalist who nearly knocked off the Japanese legend.

The match Maroulis vs Adekuoroye (Nigeria) is an interesting one. Helen pulls off an amazing foot sweep to essentially win the match late.

Stieber was able to knock off a Russian 2014 World Champion before falling to Magomed Kurbanaliev (Russia). Stieber fell behind 6-0 after giving up tilts off of a shot, and was never able to make the full comeback. The tournament was very promising for the continued improvement that Stieber continues to show.

David Taylor was in his first tournament up a weight class. He was competitive throughout, but there is some work to be done clearly. However, let's not forget how talented Taylor is. He is clearly a contender at any weight. One match here and there should not change that perception. I like that he is out getting matches as he needs them. A lot of Americans got matches this weekend which I think is something that has been lacking on the senior level. The experience and general being in shape actual matches give you is something we need more of.

The Greco guys are at it Sunday.
