Michigan, Iowa Cruise in Openers

Yes, technically the match Iowa had with Maryland was the first but the Big Ten Dual season opened Thursday night with a pair of lopsided matches in Ann Arbor & Iowa City.

Iowa wasn't favored in four of the weights, but that didn't stop the Hawkeyes from winning eight matches to post a dominant 29-6 victory.

At 157, Edwin Cooper was able to hold off #17 Richie Lewis 6-4. At 285, Sam Stoll made his case for being higher ranked when he got the takedown in overtime to beat #6 Billy Smith 3-1.

Rutgers has looked really good this season, and Brands showed respect with their full strength lineup going to make sure the home mat was defended properly. I think the win says a lot more Iowa than the loss does for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have another tough task this weekend with Nebraska.

In Ann Arbor, Michigan hosted the floundering Spartans. While not being able to win a single match against Central Michigan & Eastern Michigan last week, it was kind of surprising Sparty was able to take two from Michigan.

At 125, Mitch Rogaliner caught Youtsey in a scramble with a granby. Youtsey was unable to comeback and lost 8-6 to add to the early season struggles for the returning All-American. Javier Gasca was able to win at 141 5-3 over George Fisher. We have seen the talent from Gasca last year in bursts at 133 & 141, but questions around weight management and discipline rumored when he allegedly missed weight for the EMU dual last week and then didn't appear against CMU.

It was also nice to see Brian Murphy return to the Michigan lineup. His only other appearance this year was when he injury defaulted against Oklahoma with a knee injury in the second period.

Michigan scored bonus points in seven of their eight wins including four tech's, two pins, and a major. This finished the dual with a score of 39-6.
