Weekend Recap

It was a busy dual weekend highlighted by the marquee matchups of the top four teams in the Big Ten. Two of the most interesting open tournaments of the season went down as well, the Edinboro Open and the All-Academy Wrestling Championships.

The Edinboro Open is one of the best tournaments of redshirts and backups of the season. The All-Academy features the eight wrestling programs from the military academies which is a really cool sight. If you want to go deep, check out the brackets of these tournaments.  Coast Guard Senior All-American at 133 Nate Giorgio won the tournament becoming the first Coast Guard champion in history. He is currently undefeated and ranked #1 in D3.

Penn State hosted Iowa in front of about 16,000 people. For a season marred with rules controversies, injuries, odd scheduling, and post graduation of some big names, a lot of people are attending wrestling matches. Iowa was ranked higher in 9 of the 10 weights for this dual, but Penn State was able to win six of them to keep the crowd excited. When it settled, give Iowa credit for being the #1 team in the land. However, we know Penn State isn't going anywhere. Imagine showing that atmosphere to any recruit while being the most successful wrestler in American history. The Gulibon-Clark match is a match of the year candidate. Also, what's the deal with Morgan McIntosh? When he is healthy, he looks like a national champ. 197 is one of the most talented weight classes this year though.

Ohio State was able to beat Minnesota to sort of stake their claim as the #2 team in the country (Missouri does have an argument). While injuries kept guys out for both teams, give the Buckeyes credit. The wins by Snyder and Courts with a pin for Bo Jordan capped an impressive night. What's up with the Stiebers? Hunter has only wrestled 3 matches this year (and is 1-2), and Logan has not been up to his bonus point self in the last couple.

Nebraska beat up an undermanned Michigan team on Friday night. To add insult to injury, the Huskers got a nice pair of upsets at 184 & 197. Dudley beat Abounader 10-7, and Studebaker defeated Huntley 6-4 in OT. Michigan did get an upset of their own at 125 when Youtsey defeated Lambert 4-0.

HWT: #7 Adam Coon (MICH) by dec. over #17 Collin Jensen (NEB), 5-3 (NEB 23, MICH 10)

The Illinois grapplers defeated Wisconsin 20-15 in a match sprinkled with odd results. Ryan Taylor tech'd Zane Richards 23-5 which the upset itself is pretty surprising let alone a dominant performance. Jeff Koepke handed Timmy McCall his second upset loss of the weekend. If that match goes the other way, it's the Badgers dual meet.

184: Ricky Robertson (WISC) over #20 Nikko Reyes (ILL) (SV1, 4-2)

165: #3 Isaac Jordan (WISC) over #9 Jackson Morse (ILL) (Dec 5-1)
174: #9 Zac Brunson (ILL) over Frank Cousins (WISC) (Dec 4-0)

Michigan beat up Purdue which I was a little surprised about with how banged up the Wolverines are. Brian Murphy keeps building to the wrestler many thought he would be this year with a dominant win and pin over Doug Welch. Max Huntley was able to get an 8-0 shutout over Braden Atwood who has been up and down this year.

125 -- Conor Youtsey (U-M) major dec. Luke Welch, 10-2 U-M, 4-0
133 -- #11 Danny Sabatello (PU) dec. Zebulon Hilyard, 7-5 U-M, 4-3

Oklahoma State beat up Oklahoma taking 8 of the 10 matches in the 2nd Bedlam dual of the season. Is it possible Mark Cody was better off at American?
