Semi's Are Set

Ohio State went a perfect 5 for 5 in the quarterfinals as finally one of the contending teams stepped up and pulled away. The Buckeyes take a 20 point lead in to the Friday night session, but are only favored in one of the semis. Still the idea that Ohio State would be in this position with zero points from the injured Hunter Stieber is extremely shocking. There is still a lot of tournament left for the team race despite the current lead.

Although upsets were the story of the first 2 rounds it took us almost to the end of the quarters before a #1 seed finally went down. It was #8 (underseeded) Tyler Wilps (Pittsburgh) knocking off #1 Robert Kokesh (Nebraska). The match came as a surprise not by Wilps potential, but by how great Kokesh looked at the Big Tens.

In a tournament of surprises none are bigger than Kevin Jack (North Carolina State). The true freshman is an All-American by making it to the semis, but it's not like the bracket opened up for him (like it did for Kenny Courts). He has taken out 3 seeded wrestlers in as many matches. It was #5 Josh Dziewa 6-3 (Iowa), then #12 Joseph Ward (North Carolina) 6-5, and then #4 Devin Carter (Virginia Tech) 10-8. Jack now faces Logan Stieber, but hey the kid is just trying to win a tournament.

In the consolation, Jesse Delgado (Illinois) injury defaulted out of his match ending the impressive career that included 2 National Championships.

John Eblen (Missouri) was losing his consolation match when he was called for flagrant misconduct for a head butt. Not only does that knock him from competition, but that does forfeit his 3 points from earlier in the tournament.
