Mensah Claims Gold at Day 1 of Yarygin

russia1.jpg

Tamrya Mensah claimed gold on Day 1 at the Yarygin Grand Prix in the outer reaches of civilization aka Siberia. It's a rare feat for American women as Mensah becomes the first to claim gold at this tournament since 2010.

Last year was an interesting one for Mensah. She won the spot at the Olympic Trials, but the weight had yet to be qualified for the US. She headed overseas to both qualifiers, but fell just short. The Texas native did not begin wrestling till halfway through high school leaving a lot of experience to gain, but the potential has been apparent. This tournament win is a perfect launching point for someone who could be a big star this cycle.

Alli Ragan claimed bronze to add to her (non-Olympic) world medal she earned just over a month ago. Ragan looks to claim this spot for her own all cycle as she hopes to earn her Olympic bid in 2020.

Cody Brewer, Sarah Hildebrandt, and Nick Gwiazdowski are next up to compete.
