US Open Pre-Seeds

It's a somewhat new trials format this year and many high-velocity names have yet to qualify for the "Trials Challenge Tournament". Forgive the parentheses, but I'm not sure what are official names and what are colloquialisms. Anyway, there are a lot of good guys headed to Sin City this weekend. The top seven at each weight qualify, but the trials picture should get a lot more clear after.

Some of the standouts on the list who need to qualify for the trials are some interesting veterans and some young guys. Gable Steveson is about as hyped as any heavyweight can be, but a 4-5 match with Adam Coon could be humbling. We haven't seen Coon in Freestyle in a very long time, but with a push out point fighting that underhook will make the mat feel really small in a hurry. Also at heavyweight, you see Jake Varner. Not only does he possibly have the best shoes in the game, but he has a 2012 Olympic Gold Medal. We saw him at heavyweight at the 2017 World Cup for a couple matches, but it did seem a lot of size to give up. Andy Simmons and Hunter Stieber are two guys poised to surprise. I think many forget how good both were (are) and it'll be entertaining to see them mix it up.

There are some stars not on the list which is kind of surprising. If you are a 2018 NCAA Champ or a returning World Team member, you are qualified for the trials. That means Zain Retherford, Jason Nolf, Bo Nickal, Vincenzo Joseph, Zahid Valencia and Spencer Lee are already qualified. However, Nathan Tomasello, Mark Hall, Myles Martin, Stevan Micic and more are not qualified and not on the list.
