A Freestyle Fantasy Wrestling Idea

"Holy Shirts and Pants", What do you get for being subtle right?

Diving right into it, the international Senior-level wrestling season doesn't lend itself to fantasy formats because there isn't much of a season. (Side bar: Isn't it time we changed "Senior" to something more appropriate?) Anyways, I have an idea I would love to share with you fine folk.

I think this best works with 4 people, but 2, 5, 8 or any number divisible by 40 would work. For demonstration purposes, let's stick with 4. There will be 40 men and women in the last phase of the trials, known this year as "Final X". Four people would then have a draft to each have 10 of the Final X participants to form their teams. Since knowing who is going to wrestle from other countries can be difficult, this keeps it to the Americans.

The World Championships would be where the scoring would come in and not before. Of course, it's tough to score points if you're not there. My initial thought is to use the UWW point scoring system, but I could be swayed to use more of an NCAA tournament type set up.

Even though scores wouldn't be kept during Final X, it would make it extra interesting to root for as many as your people to possibly get through. There are always upsets at the trials, and it would be fun as hell to rag on your buddy for being the victim of an epic one.

The draft strategy becomes intriguing. Kyle Snyder is probably the top pick and whomever has to face Helen Maroulis in Final X is probably the last, but all the picks in between would be fun to play out. For instance, Haley Augello & Sarah Hildebrant both have a good chance to medal, but have to face each other for the spot. Kyle Dake would also probably slide a bit considering he will (probably) have to beat a red-hot Dieringer.

Ideally, this would make the summer Freestyle season more entertaining like fantasy sports are intended to do and then maybe even have some sizable cheddar on some medal matches in Budapest or a longshot battling back through repechage.

Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions.
