Bormet Notches First Dual Win as Michigan Head Coach

The in-state rivalry led off the dual season for both teams as Michigan traveled north to face Central Michigan in Mt Pleasant.

The host Chippewas are a young team this season, but managed to take three matches from the top five ranked Wolverines. Drew Hildebrandt used some short offense and drags to outpace Mattin for an 8-4 win, Logan Parks earned an overtime win over Lamantia, who was bumped up to fill in, and Matt Stencel continued his pinning ways in his sophomore campaign that many believe will finish with him on the All-American podium.

This was not enough to stop Sean Bormet from earning his first win as head coach for Michigan Wrestling. His top ranked returners delivered as Micic, Massa, and Amine earned pins. Malik Amine earned a major himself outpacing Simon, who is bumped up two classes from last season.

New to the lineup, Kanen Storr continued his winning ways with a major coming off of last weekend’s MSU Open title. While taking over for a four-year starter like Abounader is a tall task, many including this writer are very excited for Jelani Embree. He showed why with a hard fought 9-4 win over the veteran Atienza. Jackson Striggow is the lone returning veteran at 197 with Beazley’s graduation. He earned a 7-4 win himself.

Michigan has a tough test this Friday at Crisler Arena vs Lehigh in what is considered a top ten matchup. Lehigh pulled off several upsets for a one-sided shock in their dual last season that the Wolverines would love to avenge.
